Ted Van Dyk: Featured in the Triangle Business Journal

TED VAN DYK, Principal, New City Design Group
Are you having trouble finding talent to hire? What are you doing to mitigate the problem?
We have had some success hiring talent- there seems to be a good bit of relocation to the Triangle from other places.
Local talent, however, doe snot seem to be moving much. We are recruiting from Nc State and looking at out of state applicants more than usual, also promoting from within where possible.
What is your biggest worry in the next 12 months as it relates to your company and your people?
Uncertainty- funding for just about every sector is a question mark right now. Developers seem to want to re- engage, but the combination of interest rates, economic uncertainty, and Construction costs are stretching enthusiasm for new construction.
Settling down on the high seas would do a lot for us- RDU is a strong market, and even here, things appear to be tentative.
What is the best way to build a great team in your opinion?
Offer a good work culture, which includes rewarding work for growing professionals.
Seeing the fruits of one’s labor, in the form of positive contributions to the community, makes for a compelling case for coming to work.
We are also committed to an in-office format, which helps build sense of team, not just work.
