Experience:
Ted Van Dyk has 30 years of experience in the practice of architecture and planning. Mr. Van Dyk founded New City Design Group in 1996 after gaining extensive professional experience in both Raleigh and Seattle. Early experiences included both preservation and adaptive re-use work, planning for neo-traditional communities, urban infill, and repositioning of retail and commercial properties.
Mr. Van Dyk’s vision for New City is to nurture a well-trained, close-knit team of talented designers who can bring their skills to bear on a diverse range of meaningful project types. The firm is known for their commitment to the quality of the built fabric through thoughtful planning and respect for context. Their portfolio includes innovative commercial design, top shelf restaurant work, and a number of difficult and sophisticated renovation assignments.

When not architecting at New City, Ted enjoys cycling, playing music, and attempting to paint landscapes in oils and acrylics. He and his wife Pam have 2 grown children, have been married 34 years, and enjoy taking time-outs at their mountain cabin in Ashe County, NC.
Corey Bates, AIA, LEED AP
Principal
Corey brings over 30 years of project management, design, and production experience to the New City team. His well-rounded experience stems from his early work on large project types such as schools, cultural art facilities and semi-conductor plants, where large drawing sets and coordination efforts were key to the successful project outcome. Since moving to Raleigh in 1993, Corey has focused on a range of project types, from retail, restaurant, multi-family, health & wellness, to corporate headquarters. He has been with New City Design since its inception. Corey’s interests outside of the office include family, travel, cycling, coaching and wilderness adventures.

Special Projects
Contributing as a part-time employee when New City first opened its doors in 1996, Jeff returned to school before working for another Raleigh firm for 10 years with a concentration in university and healthcare architecture, before returning to New City in 2007. As a firm principal with 27 well-rounded years of experience in the profession, he has worked on projects of all types, sizes, and budgets, with equal attention to design, detail, and client satisfaction.
Jeff is enthusiastic about his family and all things outdoors. He and his wife are accomplished adventure racers and their completion of the 1000-mile NC Mountains to Sea Trail was profiled in the short film, So Far, for Visit NC.

Shannon Laska
Associate
Shannon is one of the longest tenured members of the team. With her background in architecture at Penn State and professional concentration on interior design, Shannon has had a hand in creating and influencing New City Design Group’s iconic designs since joining the firm in 2003. Shannon has served as a mentor to students at Meredith College and has her hands full on the home front keeping her 2 young boys (and husband Jim) out of trouble.
Shannon’s interests outside of the office include family, travel, and running.

Wayne Sidle, AIA, NCARB
Architect
Wayne Sidle has been with New City for over 7 years, most recently in a Project Architect position. He enjoys having the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects and always enjoys the difficult projects. Any restoration or re-use projects always present fun challenges for architect and owner.
In addition to over a decade of construction experience, he brings previous knowledge across retail, site development, industrial/warehouse and office space in the New England design and construction market.
When not at New City, he enjoys spending time outdoors, on the boat or working at home with his wife Ashley and two boys.

Peter J. Wentz, AIA
Architect
Peter Wentz has over a decade of experience in architecture and design. Peter joined New City Design Group in 2016 after working at The Freelon Group and Williard Stewart Architects following his graduation from NC State. He earned his architecture license in 2019.
Mr. Wentz has applied his skills and taken the lead on many successful projects in the commercial and education fields, including over two dozen at Duke University.
Outside of the world of architecture, Peter enjoys family walks, playing ultimate, and constructing crossword puzzles. He and his wonderful wife, Alyx, have two amazing young children that keep them occupied, but they still find time for occasional nights out for a movie or nice dinner.

Ryan Whitley
Project Manager
Ryan spent the later years of his college experience working as a Construction Materials Technician, testing soils, masonry and concrete placements. Since joining New City in the spring of 2015, he has developed a diverse background, working on a wide range of project types including office, mixed-use, single and multi-family residential, restaurant design, retail up-fits and new construction.
In his role at New City, Ryan has valued team collaboration and interpersonal skills to enhance the design experience to both the design team and clients. He brings an attention to detail, project design and visual representation skills to help clients visualize all phases of the project.
Outside of the office, Ryan enjoys traveling to various places around the world, having backpacked throughout Europe, Indonesia, and Iceland. Visiting all the National Parks is the current goal. In his free time, he also enjoys spending time with friends, playing music and attending sporting events. Go Pack!

Stephanie Ferrante
Senior Designer
Stephanie started at New City in 2021 and has experience in both architecture and interior design. She appreciates getting to bring both disciplines to a project in order to create a cohesive design. She has worked in various firms in the Triangle and Washington, DC on both commercial and residential projects ranging in size from single family homes to 1 million-square-foot office towers.
In her free time, she enjoys yoga, traveling, and taking on DIY home projects. She and her husband and two children enjoy getting away to their beach house in Hatteras, NC.

Sohyun Kim
Project Designer
In September 2021, Sohyun joined New City Design as an intern in the later years of her college experience, participating in various types of projects. Currently, she is working as a project designer at New City Design, contributing to team collaboration and advancing client projects. At NCDG, she leverages her visual expression skills to enhance client understanding of projects.
Outside of work, Sohyun enjoys traveling and camping, fostering communication with diverse cultures. With her artistic talents, she creates and draws, finding fulfillment and nurturing creativity.

Amelia Flick
Administrative Assistant
Amelia, a Raleigh native, started at New City in 2021 as their administrative assistant. Amelia’s roles with the company have continued to grow in her tenure, and she enjoys spending her days keeping everyone at the office happy! In her free time, Amelia is a season ticket member for the Carolina Hurricanes and enjoys spending time with her boyfriend and family.

Project Designer
Raleigh has 7 years of experience in the practice of architecture and design, including work in multi-family, restaurants, retail, hotels, and urban planning. In his time away from the office, Raleigh enjoys practicing music, walking the trails of NC, and playing games online with his friends.

Lee Hamrick, RA
Architect
Lee has practiced Architecture in Asheville, NC and Raleigh NC, gaining much experience in adaptive reuse and historic preservation projects. His experience ranges from liturgical, retail, institutional, educational, restaurant, and medical projects over the past 30 years of practice. His interest in architecture and passion for historic structures was nurtured growing up in the Victorian house his parents bought, restored, and constantly maintained.
A native son of North Carolina with old, deep roots, Lee has an interest in genealogy and history. He is a hoarder with a keen interest in federal period American furniture, clocks, and vintage Lionel toy trains. He enjoys oil painting and can occasionally be found holding down a rocker with his coonhound, Beauregard, on the front porch of the Joseph Piver house in Beaufort, NC while attempting to learn the banjo. His wife of 27 years, Jennifer, and “adult” son, Sturges tolerate him and his eccentricities.

Experience:
Colin spent two summers and a spring interning with New City Design group before joining the team full time after graduation in 2023. During his time in the College of Design, Colin spent three months abroad based in Rome, Italy exploring the country and the culture. After graduation Colin went back to explore Europe, making stops in five countries. Colin is currently working toward licensure.
Personal:
Other than architecture, Colin spends his time meeting with his friends and competing in ice hockey, golf, and volleyball leagues. He also enjoys travelling and spending time in Pennsylvania visiting his family.
